Today is given more and more emphasis to the functional requirements of pavement during service. Therefore, the design and management of functional characteristics of pavements must be carefully planned and addressed to provide safe and appropriate service to users over its entire service life. Such requirements include safe skid resistance, texture, adequate surface and subsurface drainage, riding quality, acceptable levels of tire-pavement noise, low rolling resistance, and also other new functionalities provided by cutting edge technologies and required by new mobility paradigms.
The iSMARTi society (International Society for Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Transport Infrastructures) embraced the challenge of promoting good practices in pavement design and management and facilitating the exchange of ideas and experiences among pavement researchers and professionals. Thus, to meet those challenges, the iSMARTi approved the constitution of a Technical Committee on “Pavement Functional Design and Management (TC – PFDM)”, proposed by T. F. Fwa (National University of Singapore / University of Chang’an) and Paulo Pereira (University of Minho).
In order to support the goals of TC-PFDM, an International Scientific Committee (ISC) was constituted and launched the “International Symposium Pavement Functional Design and Management – PFDM Symposium” as the main platform to reach out the international pavement engineering community. The first PFDM Symposium took place at the University of Chang’an, Xi’an, China, 24 – 26 October 2019. The venue of the second Symposium will be at the University of Minho, Guimarães, Portugal.
